UDHAGAMANDALAM: A male bear mauled a 50-year-old woman to death and attacked two others near Kotagiri in the Nilgiris district of
Tamil Nadu on Monday night.
Forest officials shot the bear dead on Tuesday as it attacked them while they were trying to capture it.
H Mathi of Thottamukkai village was on her way back home from her tea garden when the bear mauled her.
She suffered severe injuries. The bear attacked her husband, Halan, and a relative, Kumar, when they tried to save her.
Later, Mathi succumbed to her injuries.
Halan and Kumar, who too sustained severe injuries, were referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
On Tuesday morning, the bear that strayed out of a nearby forest was found roaming in the village.
The animal attacked a forester and a forest watcher while they tried to capture it. This forced other forest officials to shoot the bear dead.
The injured forest officials were referred to CMCH.
